Base Game
Played across 6x4 reels Dr Toonz features low paying symbols depicted by the now infamous characters associated with the reactoonz franchise ranging from one eyed yellow to purple toonz. With highest paying symbols again ranging from the blue symbol to the biggest paying pink toon. These characters have had a slight visual upgrade but are still instantly recognisable. Wins are awarded for adjacent symbol combinations with at least three being needed across the first three reels to unlock a minimum win. The player is helped in gaining these wins by Dr Toonz wild symbol, this substitutes all other symbols except the scatter aiding you in creating matching combinations. Also featured in the base game is the Quantumeter. This is depicted underneath Dr Toonz and begins each spin with with 0 to 2 charges already applied to it with three charges needed to trigger a feature from the Quantumeter. Each winning cascade charges the meter by 1 and will award the following game altering features;
Quantum Wilds - Adds between two and 6 wilds across the game grid and is shown as the colour blue underneath Dr Toonz
Metamorphosis - Transforms 5 to 8 symbols to another symbol. Wild and scatters cannot be transformed, this is shown as the colour yellow underneath Dr Toonz
Disintegration - Removes all low paying symbols from play leaving only the highest paying symbols in play and adds two wilds to the reels. This is shown as a red coulour below Dr Toonz
Once triggered the Quantumeter cannot be triggered again during that spin.
Bonus Game
Unlocked by landing at least three DNA style scatter symbols across the game board Dr Toonz will award 10 free spins with each additional scatter awarding 5 more free spins on top of that. During each of these spins the Quantumeter starts with either one or two charges making it easier for the player to unlock one of the base game features in the bonus round. Each reel also has the ability to be randomly selected to gain a x2 multiplier with at least 1 reel always having a multiplier attached to it but this can be activated across all 6 reels giving a maximum of 64x to any win hit across these multiplied reels.
Genius Gambling Review
With such big shoes to fill given the successes of the previous releases in the reactoonz franchise Dr Toonz really needed to deliver something innovative and enjoyable to gain our seal of approval but unfortunately at least for us it failed at both of these aspects. The slots formula and features feel old and air too close on the side of caution. The features awarded for filling the Quatumeter lack imagination and don't have enough impact to truly alter the game play in anyway, equally with these not being able to be retriggered after being used during a spin any wins that are gained from the feature or thereafter don't have any effect on the gameplay which seems a huge oversight. The bonus round equally just builds upon the gameplay of the base game and merely adds a multiplier to the overall win with a slightly increased chance of triggering the quite mundane base game features and this isn't enough to create an exciting bonus round for this much anticipated sequel. You may feel we are being harsh on Dr Toonz as it does have some impressive stats with a higher than average RTP of 96.25% and a huge max win of 22,000x however ultimately the overall gameplay is dull after an extended play session. Will people be playing Dr Toonz a year from now? in our opinion probably not. Because of these reasons we award Play'n Go's Dr Toonz our Genius Gambling Rating of 5 out of 10. Great for a few initial spins but not the type of game that we believe will carry much longevity.
